Our friends at the Brooklyn Historical Society have a very cool event coming up this week: Brooklyn on Brooklyn: Elizabeth Streb and Jed Walentas on Wednesday, May 7, and they're generously offering Brainery fans free admission if you use the code BKBRAINS when registering on Eventbrite

Join two Brooklynites who transformed community through art: MacArthur Genius Award-winning choreographer Elizabeth Streb, and Jed Walentas, whose Two Trees Management Company made DUMBO an art mecca. Expect an evening of unvarnished talk about art, real estate, and an ever-changing Brooklyn.

About the speakers:

Elizabeth Streb, a MacArthur Fellow and two time Bessie Winner, is an Action Architect. Her Streb Extreme Action Company is based at the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics (SLAM) in Williamsburg where Elizabeth and her dancers, NY’s own real-live Action Heroes, create and perform gravity-defying thrillscapes that incorporate raw nerve, risk, skill and sexy hardware. The New York Times said about STREB’s recent show Forces, “the show is a rush, as much for its daredevilry as for the way the cast members work together. Along with the machinery that they’re grappling with, there is the group itself: a machine of bodies. And with that comes the realization that these performers, no matter how muscle-bound, are made of flesh and blood. Before a plunging fall, you see it: The eyes glaze over, the spine stiffens and, in that instant, the body springs into action."

Jed Walentas is a principal of Two Trees Management Company. Under his leadership, Two Trees has transformed DUMBO from a gritty, underutilized industrial district into a vibrant, creative community. He and Two Trees are making a similar impact on Williamsburg, where they've transformed an old cooperage into the trendsetting Wythe Hotel, and are poised to create an architecturally spectacular residential complex on the site of the former Domino Sugar Refinery.
