Taught by Elysa Lozano
Trained at the Rhode Island School of Design and Goldsmiths College, Elysa Lozano’s art practice emulates a not-for-profit, called Autonomous Organization, which has produced proposals for Socialist colonies in a high-rise building in Houston, Texas, re-branded an exhibition space in London as a construction site, and created a web archive of project space survival strategies. Between curating, writing and conducting field research, she lectures at CUNY LaGuardia in Figure Drawing, Art History, and Urban Studies.

Fundamentals of Drawing is an introductory short course that is designed to give people access to the processes, concepts, tools, materials and techniques involved in the creation of a drawing on a two-dimensional surface. Innovative slide shows and clear demonstrations of basic drawing techniques will give you essential skills to enhance the process of creative exploration. Each week we will cover a different skill, learning from the masters, which will culminate in a creative project where you will get to use those skills to express yourself.
Materials needed: 18x12" newsprint pad, 18x12" sketch pad, extra soft vine charcoal, pencil set, mars plastic eraser, gummy eraser
Week 1: Exploring Line
Sunday, October 12, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
This week will focus on the many different types of line, and variety of ways to use line, to express both flat and multi-dimensional scenes. We will also experiment with various mediums to expand the textures within one drawing.
Week 2: Shading and Shapes
Sunday, October 19, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
This week's class explores how to express three dimensional objects on a flat picture place using a gradation of shadows. We can work on various levels from simple spheres and cones to more complex ones like vases or lamps. If you have a ball, cylindrical water bottle or complex object at home, please bring it to work with.
Week 3: Negative Space
Sunday, October 26, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
Negative space allows everyone to work on changing the way you see objects in relation to one another by looking at - and drawing - the space between them. This incredibly useful exercise also creates some of the most eye-catching art.
Week 4: Figure Drawing
Sunday, November 2, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
Figure drawing combines line, shadow and negative space to produce highly accurate renditions of the human form. Drawing the figure helps you internalize the proportions of the figure while exploring a graceful and intricate subject.
Week 5: Geometric Perspective
Sunday, November 9, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
Drawing cubes in space may sound challenging but with some simple rules and practices you will be able to accurately convey perspective. This skill will translate to drawing architecture, cityscapes or other rectilinear shapes.
Week 6: Personal Still Life Drawing
Sunday, November 16, 11am-1pm Eastern Time
All the skills we have accumulated over the course of the sessions will come to play in our final project. You are invited to set up an array of objects that represent you personally and utilize techniques from line drawing to perspective to recreate that still life as a drawing. We will be working on these drawings together in class and presenting them to each other at the end.
