Nature, Design, and How You Can Save the World
Taught by Christa Avampato
Christa Avampato grew up on an apple farm in the Hudson Valley and spent most of her childhood climbing trees and playing in the dirt with her dogs. Down in the dirt, she learned how beautiful nature is.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Economics and History at the University of Pennsylvania, and her MBA at the Darden School at the University of Virginia. Christa always wanted to bring her love for science and nature into her business work. Growing increasingly concerned about climate change, she decided to continue her graduate studies in Arizona State University's Biomimicry Program.
Now as the founder of Double or Nothing Media in New York City, she makes her living as a product developer who uses biomimicry, the study and application of nature's designs to human-designed product. Her goal is to rid the world of fossil fuel-based plastic, and she is currently working on that research and commercial application with a nanoscience lab based at CUNY's Advanced Science Research Center in Harlem.
Christa has a deep and abiding love for history. She is a writer, storyteller, and tour guide, and you can find her writing in The Washington Post, Inside History Magazine, Royal Media Partners publications, PBS.org, and The Motley Fool. Christa is an award-winning author and is currently at work on two novels as well as several screenwriting projects. She produces and hosts New York City's Secrets and Lies, a live storytelling game show that is two truths and a lie with secret New York City history.
Don't you love the incredible animal and plant facts that fly around social media? Mosquitoes helped researchers create ouch-less needles to administer vaccines. Glass sponges living on the ocean floor are inspiring the creation of invisible armor. Hawk moths are teaching us to make stable drones that fly flawlessly even in the worst weather. Nature has answers to every design problem we have if we know where to look and how to adapt those designs into our own products.
If you've ever wanted to learn more about nature's designs and apply them yourself to solve a design challenge, this workshop is for you. In this interactive design workshop, you'll learn about the incredible abilities of animals and plants, and then use their genius to inspire a product of your own. You don't need to have any design or science experience. The workshop will walk you through fun games and exercises related to design-thinking, and you'll walk away from the workshop inspired, hopeful, and empowered to make a positive difference in the world for all beings who call it home.
