Taught by Jess Schreibstein

Jess Schreibstein learned to knit from her great grandmother over 15 years ago and hasn't stopped her exploration of textiles since. She has studied batik, embroidery, and spinning; completed a weaving and natural dye residency in Oaxaca, Mexico last spring; been featured on the popular knitting blog Fringe Association; started up the knitting club at NPR; and is a contributor to the inaugural issue of Knit Wit Magazine. She also started the DC Food Swap, a community event for home cooks to barter for food they made or grew themselves. You can find her on her food blog, Witchin' in the Kitchen, and on Instagram at @thekitchenwitch.

This is an old class! Check out the current classes, or sign up for our mailing list to see if we'll offer this one again.

This class might be over, but get first dibs on new sessions and brand-new classes by signing up on our ultra-rad mailing list.

Do you want to learn to knit and don't know where to start? Or do you have the basics down and want to branch out of scarf-making? This class is for you.

It will cover all the basics, starting with how to pick a yarn, needles, and a pattern for a project. You will learn how to knit and purl (the two primary knit stitches), how to cast on to begin your hat, and how to avoid common mistakes when knitting on circular needles. Each student will have one-on-one guidance to get their hat underway, and more experienced students will have the chance to work on a more complex pattern. Although you won't finish knitting a full hat during this class, you will learn the techniques you need to reduce the top of the hat and finish it.

If you'd like to have us provide materials for the class, please be sure to select that option from the drop down menu. After signing up for the class, Jess will be in touch to confirm your color selection for your hat.

If you'd rather bring your own materials, select that option on the checkout page and bring the following with you to class:
- One skein of worsted weight yarn (like Manos del Uruguay), spun into a ball
- One 16" circular needle, size US 9 (bamboo needles recommended)
- One set of five double-pointed needles, size US 9
