Bookbinding at Home (Online)
Taught by Kelly Laughlin
Kelly Laughlin is a multidisciplinary artist and educator who focuses on the playful, meditative acts of making. She believes every person is capable of living a creative life. Kelly is the founder of Odette Press, a paper marbling and bookbinding studio focused on specialty papers, books, and stationery, created with the intention to support self discovery and healing through the act of writing.
A three-part series centered around doing the best with what you've got. Bookbinding from home focuses on creating beautiful blank books using creativity to come up with materials (rather than heading to the art supply store!)
Learn basic bookbinding techniques, keep your hands busy, and infuse creative problem solving into your practices and process.
WEEK 1 | A Container for Caring: Pamphlet Bound Journal
A journal can be a blank canvas, a space for emotions and potential, a garden plot for the seeds of your thoughts and dreams. In this class, empower your creative practice as you craft yourself a simple, pamphlet stitched book with blank pages. We'll end with a brief discussion of how a journal can be a place for the practices of noticing, awareness, and self caring.
WEEK 2 | A Sturdy Space: French Link Stitch
In this class, you'll be lead through creating a multiple signature notebook for all of your long stories and exciting dreams. String thoughts together as you build a book with a decorative, supportive stitch to hold your pages together; more signatures means more space to roam in your writing. You'll create a soft cover French Link journal, and talk briefly about building a journaling practice over time.
WEEK 3 | Small But Mighty: Zines for Your Story
Your words, images, and experiences, are so important, and a book can be a space for these ways of expressing your story. In this class, empower your creative practice with simple, quick one page book structures for zine-making. Capture your important messages, your musings, your dreams, as you explore quickness and ease in the bookbinding process: accordion books, one page books, and staple-bound zines.
