For decades, jazz fans and scholars struggled with the paucity of adequately recorded material from the brief time that John Coltrane spent in the Thelonious Monk quartet. In 2005, however, the Library Of Congress accidentally happened upon a long-thought-lost reel of Monk and Trane performing live at Carnegie Hall in 1957. Originally taped for the Voice Of America radio program, this concert is a revelation: a full set of Monk's quartet with Trane in pristine audio! This class will delve into the mysterious circumstances surrounding this record's disappearance and re-discovery -- a true jazz thriller! We will take a deep listen as well.

No previous musical knowledge or experience necessary to enjoy this class. All students will receive their choice of a Spotify or MP3 playlist, plus a guide to further recommended reading and listening.
