The Design Gym - Street Research: User Research with No Budget and No Permission
Taught by The Design Gym
We are a group of designers, strategists and thinkers of many stripes. Go to www.thedesigngym.com for our full bios. They are too long for this tiny page.
If You Don't Understand People, You Don't Understand Business:
Too often, we're asked to solve problems without ever talking to the people we're trying to help, or sell solutions to.
Street research is about using low barrier techniques to develop a greater understanding of the needs, behaviors and daily activities of people in order to design for their needs. We'll focus on low-barrier and low-budget ways to build empathy and understanding...and how to use what you've learned about your target group to help you move your projects forward.
Whether it’s to understand a market you’d like to launch a business in, a customer group that your business is serving or to make more informed decisions for your clients, these methods will help you to make more informed decisions.
The Output:
Expect to walk away with 3 to 5 methods that you’ll understand well enough to go out into the world and practice.
Week one: Research Tools and techniques, project timelines and recruitment. During the class you’ll collaboratively outline a short research plan for a community you want to understand better.
Week Two: After the first class, you'll team up and run your street research in teams, on your own time. You'll come back to the second class with your data and we'll unpack it together and turn it into a strategic presentation.
The Client:
For this class, we're excited to be partnering with The Taproot Foundation. Taproot works with social good organizations to get them access to talented business services through a pro-bono network. Thier mission is to "lead, mobilize and engage professionals in pro bono service that drives social change."
