Taught by Kelly Laughlin

Relax in the yard at the Brooklyn Brainery and explore the creative, mesmerizing process of marbling paper as you create one of a kind prints -- in big and small sizes! Suminagashi translates to “floating ink” or “spilled ink” and is the playful, meditative marbling process you’ll learn in this outdoor workshop. Come explore the nature of water, and find inspiration through swirling, nature-inspired designs as you craft your own large and small marbled prints.
Using ink, brushes, water, and paper, you’ll play with floating ink on the surface of water and laying paper down to make prints. In this workshop, we’re expanding the process, and playing with scale as you make your marbled papers in larger pools and smaller trays.
You’ll learn the history of the suminagashi process, be guided through the steps for this awe-inspiring practice, then spend the rest of your time meditating on the nature of water and ink as you let your creativity roam. You’ll play with the flow of the process and craft a collection of large and small marbled papers. Suminagashi is a simple practice that is beginner friendly and great for anyone looking to play with color, connect to the nature of inspiration and creativity, and try something new!
All materials provided. You’ll use an easy-to-use marbling kit, a variety of papers, and leave with a collection of large and small marbled prints.
