So Who Is Vladimir Putin, And What Does He Want?
Taught by Mark Galeotti
Professor of Global Affairs at NYU's School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs, former special adviser to the British Foreign Office, and all-round Russia wonk, Mark first visited Moscow back in Soviet times and has been drawn back to it time and time again since. He's stood in bread lines, drunk with gangsters, watched the riot police move in on protests, and partied with the "new Russians." Most recently, he spent the first seven months of this year there, and saw Sochi, Crimea and the eastern Ukrainian crises from the inside. It wasn't always a pretty sight.
Judo master. Bare-chested man of action. Ice-cold KGB veteran. New model tsar. Invader of random neighboring countries. Brooding Kremlin schemer.
Russian president Vladimir Putin has carefully cultivated a series of personas, but nonetheless he still seems to keep catching us all off guard. Now's the chance to learn about the man behind the masks, and what he wants for Russia--and for the rest of us. And to hear about how Putin uses his dog as a geopolitical weapon and why it matters how long he keeps you waiting.
