Research Your Historic House
Taught by Chelcey Berryhill and Kelly Carroll
Chelcey Berryhill holds her Master of Science degree in Historic Preservation from Pratt Institute and can be found leading walking tours throughout Brooklyn’s historic neighborhoods or digging through archives researching building dates and the stories of the people who once lived there. A native of Georgia, she is not only an architectural history nerd, she is a painter, a passionate University of Georgia football fan (Go DAWGS!) and can be found pickling or baking according to her grandmother’s family-famous recipes.
Kelly Carroll is the Director of Preservation for LANDMARK WEST! and graduated from Columbia University with her Master of Science in Historic Preservation. A native of Buffalo, NY she attributes her interest in architecture and neighborhoods to this majestic city. Kelly has belonged to NYC since 2010 and enjoys the many fruits NYC has to offer, especially its buildings, street art and its pubs.
Whether you live uptown, downtown, or in the outer boroughs, chances are you may live in a building that is a century old, or even older. It may have even been a business or even abandoned at one point! You never know...
Chelcey Berryhill and Kelly Carroll will lead you through the basics of researching the space you live in, and how it may (or may not!) have changed over time. We'll explore buildings' past lives through photographs, insurance maps, advertisements, census data, directories and more. Emphasis is given on researching your building from home, but there will also be offsite-collections information provided for the stoic researcher.
