Renovating Your Apartment
Taught by Lisa Tilney
Lisa Tilney is a Yale-trained architect with her own project management practice. She has been hired by non-profit boards, corporations, and individuals to oversee design and construction on a wide array of building projects. These include: theaters, recording studios, and offices in Manhattan, a 34,000-square-foot public library, and the conversion of dilapidated Greenwich Village brownstone apartments back into a single-family home. She and her husband survived their own Brooklyn Heights renovation project.
Thinking about renovating your apartment and daunted by horror stories of it “costing double” and taking “three times as long” to finish?
This class provides a nuts-and-bolts overview of the process of renovation. From gauging the level of (mental, emotional, financial) commitment required for a renovation project, understanding the phases of design and establishing a realistic budget, to selecting the right architect (or perhaps deciding that you don’t need one), and hiring a contractor. And yes, finishing on time and on budget.
The class does not touch on the design aspects of renovation, nor on how to actually build something yourself. Rather, it offers an administrative framework so you are prepared, knowledgeable, and empowered before you embark on any renovation or improvement project.
