Taught by Barbara Van Elsen

Barbara is a lifelong crocheter who, when she could find no advanced crochet classes in NYC, founded the New York City Crochet Guild in 2001. Since then, she’s taken a whole lot of classes and taughtclasses from beginners to freeformers from the East Coast to the West. She currently teaches for the Craft Yarn Council’s Teaching Certification Program and, from time to time, in the Continuing Ed Dept. at Kingsborough. In between making her own creations, of course.

String bags, whether intended as market bags, beach bags or something else, are easy to carry and quick to make—wouldn’t it be nice to customize one with your own color choice, proportions, and favorite handles?

In this class, you'll learn to make your own customized crocheted string bag: choose from two different patterns, two kinds of mesh, two ways of working (back and forth or in the round), and two different handles. I’ll make sure you get started easily and know how to finish, so your bag looks polished. Then we’ll discuss various options and embellishments. If you choose to make a market bag or smaller, you might even finish it in class.

Skill level: Please be comfortable making chain and single crochet stitches.

Materials: Please bring:
- Measurements, if you know what size bag you want to make. (If you don’t, you can just follow one of the patterns.)
- 2 or more balls of cotton yarn or enough yarn for the size bag you want to work on in class.
- Appropriately sized hook for your yarn, as well as one smaller and one larger, if you have them.
- Your usual crochet kit, if you have one.
