From its moody cover image to its iconic title track, John Coltrane's Blue Train is a seminal jazz album that has stood the test of time with ease. Few people though know the true story of this enduring record: the circumstances behind how it was conceived, recorded, issued, and marketed at the time; as well as its enduring legacy as an approachable classic from a somewhat difficult but important jazz artist. Coltrane himself considered Blue Train among his favorite recordings and this class will help us understand why he gave it that distinction by giving the album a deep listen couched within a historical/cultural context.

No previous musical knowledge or experience is necessary to enjoy this class. All students will receive an MP3 playlist afterwards, plus a guide to further recommended reading and listening.
