Food Illustration: Illustrate Your Own Recipe (Windsor Terrace)

Malou Zuidema is an illustrator and teaching artist from the Netherlands. She graduated with a four year Bachelor in Fine Arts in Education from the Amsterdam School of Art in the Netherlands in 2010,and since than has run workshops as part of festivals, community art projects and in art studios in both Amsterdam and Hobart (Australia). Her work is characterized as hand-made, quirky and colorful. Her images are often the results of scribble drawings and playful collages.
She believes that playfulness is what creating art is all about; having a great time and going home with something new, something that you didn’t know you could create before.
This workshop is for everyone who loves food, cooking and drawing; for all you foodies, crafters, artists, creators, and kitchen masters. Over the course of two hours everyone create a beautiful range of some yummy illustrated ingredients and dishes.
We will start off with different warm-up drawing exercises, where you’ll be introduced to playing with different art mediums and look at how to capturing food illustration. After that we’ll look at everyone’s favourite recipes and look at how we can turn them into beautiful cookbook worthy illustrations. We’ll look at how to set and arrange your ingredients on you page (composition), as well as use of color and text.
In this 3-hour workshop you will:
- Play with different techniques: drawing, painting, mixed media
- Learn how to composite and arrange the different ingredients into an eye catching, full page illustration
- Look into backgrounds, patterns and type to be used on your page
Don’t forget to bring your favorite recipe! All materials are provided, no need to bring anything. Depending on how fast you work, you may not finish your entire illustration during class!
