Floral Bundle Dyeing and Eco Printing at Better than Jam
Taught by Karin Persan
Karin Persan is a hands on textile designer and maker, working from her store and studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She received her BFA in 2001 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused in Fiber and Material Studies. She formed her line "Better Than Jam" of printed clothing and accessories shortly after graduating, while teaching on the side. In early 2010 she opened a boutique of the same name, which has since grown to include a communal studio and workshop space.
Explore dyeing with nature, specifically using the magical bundle dye methods.
In this workshop we talk about mordants and modifiers and how they relate to this particular dye method. 4 different pots will be prepared so that students can experiment the many ways you can use heat, steam, and minerals to bring different results and change the colors of plants and flowers.
All materials provided. Each student will leave with sample materials and one final piece.
Class runs about 2 hours and be prepared to possibly take damp work home. Class meets at Better than Jam in Bushwick!
