Floral Bundle Dyeing
Taught by Karin Persan
Karin Persan is a hands on textile designer and maker, working from her store and studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She received her BFA in 2001 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused in Fiber and Material Studies. She formed her line "Better Than Jam" of printed clothing and accessories shortly after graduating, while teaching on the side. In early 2010 she opened a boutique of the same name, which has since grown to include a communal studio and workshop space.
Bundle dyeing is a great way to sample colors that you collect, forage, or save from the food waste bin. Your collection of dye stuff doesn't have to be grand to sample the different color ways in this fun process. As a beginner, you will be amazed and shocked by some of the colors you can achieve. The more you create, the larger your knowledge of natural dyes becomes.
We start talking about mordants and modifiers and how they relate to this particular dye method. 2 different pots will be prepared so that students can experiment the many ways you can use heat, steam, and minerals to bring different results and change the colors of plants and flowers.
All materials are provided. Each student will receive a silk bandana, silk hankie, and cotton bandana. Students are welcome to bring 1 small all natural fiber piece that we will mordant while you dye the provided pieces. Keep on the smaller size because we only have so much room in the pots. If a piece is too big you may not be able to fit it in the pot with everyone else's pieces.
