Glass beads have a long history that links together parallel disciplines of graphic design, modern and contemporary art, science, and economics, and sociology.

During the course of this lecture and demonstration, we will explore and discuss many ways to think about the function of handmade beads in our current historical moment, and demonstrate methods for creating these objects in the studio.

The workshop will begin with a contextual lecture discussing the use of handmade beads as currency, and exploring relationships between modern art and design and current glass bead designs and uses. Then, we will move into the glass studio for a live flameworking demonstration where different methods for creating glass beads will be shown.

We will conclude with a Q&A session and a tour of the UrbanGlass Facilities.
