Exploring the Solar System
Taught by Irene Pease
As Brooklyn’s Friendly Neighborhood Astronomer, Irene enjoys sharing views through her telescope to passersby on busy sidewalks, and under darker skies in Prospect Park. She has a bachelors degree in Physics from the University of Arizona, and has worked as a professional amateur astronomer, astrophysics educator, telescope operator, and Mad Scientist. In addition to astronomizing around Brooklyn, Irene teaches physics courses at York College and climbs fake rocks.
Do you remember the old phrase that was supposed to help us remember the order of the planets? My Very Educated Mother uh… did… Something? Don't worry, 4th grade a long time ago, back before dwarf planets and extensive Martian exploration.
We'll get you caught up through an interactive tour of the solar system, looking at the planets, asteroids, Kuiper Belt Objects, etc., and the mind-blowing amount of space between them.
Bring your sense of adventure, and be prepared to participate!
(This is an indoor class, not a viewing session!)
