Emily Dickinson
Taught by Rodrigo Sanchez and Ana Sanchez
Dynamic brother sister duo take on poetry, tackling one modernist at a time.
Along with Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson is one of the most distinctive and recognizable voices in American poetry. Despite having lived a life of ever-increasing isolation and never straying far from her home in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dickinson's poetry tackles head-on such broad universal themes as life and death, love, friendship, and personal identity.
In this class, we'll look at some of Dickinson's best loved poems in order to better appreciate her work, keeping an eye to both interpreting the poems and examining their unique poetic style, as expressed in her one-of-a-kind use of ballad meter and punctuations. Some discussion of the poems' publishing history will also be included.
