“Sudden” fiction. Microfiction. Flash fiction. Short shorts. Miniatures. Whatever you call it, compressed storytelling challenges us to reconsider our well-established notions of narrative while providing a mini-lab for innovation in our own writing. In this two-hour craft course, we will study and discuss a half dozen “flash fiction” stories (bite-sized tales, mostly between 100 and 1,000 words) that capture the near-limitless power and possibilities of the form. We will take a careful look at the essential components of story and explore techniques that will allow you to produce leaner, more tightly focused, and emotionally concentrated stories. By the end of class, you’ll walk away inspired to push your fiction in new, bold, and exciting directions.
