Block-busting for Fiction Writers
Taught by Jenna Leigh Evans
My fiction has been published in In Pieces: An Anthology of Fragmentary Writing; Ping-Pong; and the online
literary journals FragLit and The Nervous
Breakdown. I wrote a restaurant review column for the Valley Advocate from
2003-2005. In 2009, I coordinated fiction writing workshops at PARACHUTE, the
Coney Island Arts Festival. I was a recipient of the 2010 Barbara Deming Money
for Women grant, and runner-ups for both the 2009 Maine Individual Artist Award
and the Fine Arts Work Center of Provincetown Writing Fellowship.
Getting stuck can sap our confidence, make us
dread writing, and bring our project to a standstill. In this class, I'll show
you my fun, effective method for breaking on through to the other side. We'll trick your natural impulse to
procrastinate into being your new best friend, find out how to be a pirate
rather than a zombie, and learn why the
Buddha appreciates a good mud pie. By
the end of the second class, you'll have produced one totally decent scene -
and will be ready to fearlessly re-approach your craft.
Bring your favorite writing implements,
headphones if you like to write to music, and wear comfy clothes - no one
showing up in pajamas shall be mocked, you have my word. Also bring one small noisemaker. Suggestions
for that last item: raw beans in a deli container, a spoon and a can, a baby
rattle or cat toy, or the like. But heck,
you're welcome to bring a tambourine if you've got one.
