Jen Messier for How to Read Short Stories
we were reading the Flannery O'Connor story, all I could think of was this Grant Wood painting.
There's some of the same themes as the story--imminent death, modernity vs. tradition, and of course it captures that sense of fear that comes with being in trouble in the middle of nowhere. Wood's best known for Amerian Gothic, but I love what a rich narrative this painting tells with relatively few elements, in the same way we were talking about how short stories are so economic with words but ripe with meaning.
