In this two session writing course, students will explore the practice of writing as a fun and meaningful component of retirement. In an encouraging and safe environment and in the company of peers, we will explore the many choices of what to write as well as your personal motivation. We will discuss many best practices both for developing a first draft and for editing the early version into a polished manuscript. With some in-class exercises and discussions about examples provided, there will be the beginning of a foundation for success as a writer.

Note: There will be some writing and critiquing homework to be completed in the two weeks between the sessions to break through the barriers to self-directed pursuit of this noble calling.

Class limited to twelve students. Beginners are welcome although prior experience is good.

Day 1: Getting started: Why, what, how and expectations

After exploring your purpose in writing and considering the many different formats (e.g. essay, short story, book), we will examine the basic elements of writing (e.g. tension, first draft, critiquing, editing) to get suggestions about possible approaches. In-class exercises will allow you to find your comfort zone. Homework to practice writing and critiquing will further your insights about what works for you.

Day 2: Learning by doing and guidelines for success

Reviewing the homework together will allow you to consider different styles to facilitate the evolutions of your own. We will consider the role of character development and story arc as backbone elements of writing. Lastly, we will discuss some ideas for continuing your own development as a writer.
