The Heart of Music
Taught by Emma Sky
The daughter of a singer-songwriter and jazz musician, Emma Sky has been immersed in music since birth. Emma studied music performance on classical violin at the University of Vermont, where she earned her degree in 2008 and was teaching and performing professionally for the past four years.
New to Brooklyn, NY, Emma has begun to focus on playing and recording hip-hop with various artists and labels, and creating magical sounds with her current band The Eggs (http://theeggs.net/). However, variety is what drives her as a musician, and she is open to performing with and teaching anyone, in most any genre. Emma loves to explore the stylistic boundaries of electric and acoustic violin.

Music is a part of all of our lives in one way or another. But what makes up music? Why does it speak to us the way it does? How does it connect human beings?
The Heart of Music will explore these questions and many, many more. Through listening, discussion, and exercises, students will learn what music really is, and how to get the most out of listening to it. We'll cover some basic music theory and music history and examine the emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical impact different kinds of music can have on each of us.
Through recordings and live playing, we'll gain a deeper understanding of our relationship with music and through it, with ourselves.
