Bookbinding: Coptic Binding
Taught by Woody Leslie
Woody Leslie is an artist, bookmaker, cartoonist, and musician originally from Vermont, but now living in Brooklyn. He is the founder One Page Productions, an artist book printing press specializing in tiny books made from one sheet of paper (more at onepageproductions.com). Not only has he printed a wide range of titles through 1Pp, he has also self-published a multitude of handbound artist books, writings, comic books, and more.
Learn how to make your own Coptic bound sketchbook/notebook from start to finish. Coptic binding is an ancient binding structure with two hard covers and an open spine chain-linked with thread. The open spine allows the book to lay flat when opened, making it ideal for writing or drawing in, not to mention making it look gorgeous!
We'll cover the entire process, from tearing large sheets of paper to size, folding them, assembling sections & piercing them, constructing cloth-bound covers, and of course biding the whole book together.
Students have the option to bring in their own fabric for the book covers--it's a great way to immortalize an old beloved t-shirt or the like, too worn to be worn anymore. Not only will you come home with your very own beautiful handmade book, but you'll also have all the knowledge to make more again in the future.
