The History of the Scottish Highlands (ONLINE)

Taught by David McNicoll

Although I now live in New York I come from the heart of the Scottish Highlands, a land steeped in
whisky in both story and song, and where I honed my knowledge and enjoyment of our national drink. Over the last decade I have taken that experience and built upon it, representing as ambassador several Scotch brands in the city. I am about to launch a new book exploring the ‘language of whisky’, and the origins of the names of those familiar bottles on the back-bar.

Iconic is an over used word in this day and age, but when it comes to the spectacular and timeless beauty of the Scottish Highlands it is no exaggeration. When we think of the Highlands it stirs the imagination, with dramatic crenellated mountains, haunted ruined castles and deep green vales providing the backdrop for countless bloody clan battles and modern-day movie sets. They are mysterious, enigmatic even, and yes iconic.

As I cannot take you to the Highlands, the purpose of the class is to bring the Highlands to you and explore how they were formed, how its history developed including Celtic myths, Viking raiders and lost glories of forgotten kings. I’ll weave through ancient forests, the drama of the peoples who eked out a living amid the scenery, the rise and fall of the Gaelic language, the transformation into a romanticized Victorian theme-park; and maybe a wee drop of whisky to wash it all down. We all have our idea and vision of what the Highlands are, let me peel back the layers and take you on that journey.
