Taught by Malou Zuidema

Malou Zuidema is an illustrator and teaching artist from the Netherlands. She graduated with a four year Bachelor in Fine Arts in Education from the Amsterdam School of Art in the Netherlands in 2010,and since than has run workshops as part of festivals, community art projects and in art studios in both Amsterdam and Hobart (Australia). Her work is characterized as hand-made, quirky and colorful. Her images are often the results of scribble drawings and playful collages.

She believes that playfulness is what creating art is all about; having a great time and going home with something new, something that you didn’t know you could create before.

This crash course is great if you have always wanted to learn how to draw: whether your last art class was in high school, or if you just want to refresh or add to your drawing skills and knowledge.

It’s a fun, hands-on, drawing class, where the first part starts off with a few warm-up sketches, followed by exercises introducing some of the essential drawing techniques.

The second part is about putting what you’ve learned into practice, where you’ll work on your own piece(s), at your own pace. This allows for the opportunity to ask one-on-one feedback or other questions you might have when you get stuck with the drawing process.

We’ll be working with a still life for this first part of the class, but you can bring an image of your own inspiration for the second part.

In this 2.5-hour workshop we’ll cover:

  • Basics: Talking pencils - 2H, HB, 2B, 6B – why (and how to use them), erasers and paper.
  • Different approaches on how to set up your sketch/drawing; as this is maybe the hardest part of the drawing process.
  • Proportion: looking into different techniques that will help you to put everything in proportion.
  • Phases of a drawing: how to go from sketch to a finished drawing
  • Shading and texture: to make sure your drawing looks realistic

Note: this is a 2.5 hour class which will not guarantee that you will go home with a finished drawing, but you’ll definitely walk away having learned new tools to bring your drawing to another level, and/or to finish at home. You'll also get a set of drawing pencils to take home with you.
