A note on humidity

Humidity, or rather the precise control of it, is crucial to the longevity of a terrarium. Too little leaves you with a dried-out wasteland; too much and your terrarium will bloom a garden of mold and fungus that, despite any science-fiction weirdness or antibiotic properties it may possess, is not aesthetically suited to the woodland environment we'll be recreating. In the class you'll learn the proper technique for arranging plants in a terrarium to allow proper air flow while keeping delicate mosses and ferns adequately moist. Make sure the terrarium container you bring has a tight-fitting lid that can be adjusted to allow water vapors to escape if the humidity is too high. Also, make sure there is enough room in your container for the type of plants you want to keep in it. The largest plants we'll be working with will need six to 10 inches of space above the soil line, but I've seen some interesting stuff done with just some rocks and moss that only need a couple inches of clearance from the top to be happy.
