Taught by Karin Persan

Karin Persan is a hands on textile designer and maker, working from her store and studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  She received her BFA in 2001 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused in Fiber and Material Studies.  She formed her line "Better Than Jam" of printed clothing and accessories shortly after graduating, while teaching on the side.  In early 2010 she opened a boutique of the same name, which has since grown to include a communal studio and workshop space.

This is an old class! Check out the current classes, or sign up for our mailing list to see if we'll offer this one again.

Learn how to silkscreen your own design using a stencil, a special resist technique, and magical Indigo!

Using your design, we start immediately cutting stencils with an exacto blade. With your new stencil, which you can keep, we use a silkscreen to print different mixtures of resist. This will mask your fabric and block the Indigo.

Indigo is like no other dye and creates a truly wonder shade of blue. Learn how to start your own vat, and balance it using pre reduced Indigo. Once your resist and fabric are prepared, we will dip your piece into vat to create your one of kind creation!

Students should come with their design ready. Images should be no larger than 8"x6" and make sure there are no independent parts inside of a cut-out hole. With stencils you will notice that shapes can't float. Any detail will need to be bridged to the rest of the image.
