Taught by Peuo Tuy

Peuo (pbaou) Tuy is a Cambodian American spoken word poet and an artist educator originally from Lowell, Massachusetts. Her self-published storytelling poetry book, Khmer Girl, depicts personal atrocities about the Cambodian genocide, living in refugee camps, and navigating life as a dark-skinned Southeast Asian woman in America while experiencing self-hate, and searching for self-love and acceptance in our ever-evolving world. She has been featured at various venues on the East Coast and was part of Urbintel’s Inc., “HerStory” spoken word tour. She is also part of a video project curated by Parson School of Design at The New School called “Futurographies,” which travelled to Cambodia and France in Spring 2016. She is currently working on a children’s storybook. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Africana/Puerto Rican/Latino Studies and a minor in Asian American Studies. Peuo lives in New York City and is currently on a book tour in the East Coast, Midwest, and West Coast. Learn more about her at www.PeuoTuy.com.

Our ancestors’ stories of success, love, and failure are the foundation of the themes and challenges in our current lives.

In this workshop, participants will be guided to search their own histories for ancestral stories and write them as story poems, with an emphasis on the use of descriptive words. The poems can draw upon historical events as well as tales passed down through the generations, but participants also will be guided to trigger their imaginations and suppose what they would have done if they lived alongside their own ancestors in times gone by.

After poems are completed, participants will identify two strong motivational lines from their work and use them to make an inspirational card. We'll also enjoy tea and fruit throughout the workshop.

Please bring a family photo you feel comfortable sharing with you. Feel free to bring a journal with you, though we'll also have paper and pens available.
