As Brooklyn’s Friendly Neighborhood Astronomer, Irene enjoys sharing views through her telescope to passersby on busy sidewalks, and under darker skies in Prospect Park.  She has a bachelors degree in Physics from the University of Arizona, and has worked as a professional amateur astronomer, astrophysics educator, telescope operator, and Mad Scientist.  In addition to astronomizing around Brooklyn, Irene teaches physics courses at York College and climbs fake rocks.

If you saw Interstellar, you know all you need to about black holes. But there are even more mysterious topics in astronomy – what is dark matter? Dark energy? Are they related? Do we really know that they even exist, or are astrophysicists just making them up to get attention and funding?

In this class, we’ll shed some light on these “dark” topics -  what scientists know so far (or are pretty sure they know), how they know, and what discoveries lie ahead.
